What is a Blog and Do You Need One?

Updated: Aug 5, 2020

What is a blog?

The term 'blogger' is thrown around a lot nowadays, but what actually is a blog?

The revolution began in 1994 when college student Justin Hall started his personal homepage and soon after, the term 'weblog' was coined to describe these personal online journals. Ordinary people were sharing their thoughts and opinions on various subject matters. In the last 20 years, however, blogging has evolved into a business need, side hustle and a way for people to share their knowledge.

There are now approximately 500 million blogs on the web to date. If that's not insane, I don't know what is.

Blogs as we knew it changed and from this evolution, bloggers were created. A blogger is simply a person who owns, runs and creates written content on a blog. These people are magicians, who know exactly how to use their blog to engage their audience and make money.

They learnt how to monetize (earn money from) their blog and generate income from their words! This was major in the world of business and now most huge businesses have their own blog too.

Why are blogs useful?

You now know what a blog is. But why are they useful?

When someone visits your website, the goal is for them to trust you. This is the case whether you're a business selling products and services, or if you're running a personal blog. Why? Because you want that person to convert.

If you're not familiar with what a conversion or conversion rate is let me take a quick detour.

The conversion rate is the percentage of people who visit your website who complete a goal (a conversion), out of the total number of website visitors.

Example: If I have an online store, my goal is to get website visitors to make a purchase. This purchase is the conversion. If 1 person in every 10 people who visited my website made a purchase, my conversion rate would be 10%.

Each business or person will have a different goal; If you run a personal blog, your goal might be to get email subscribers.

So, when your visitors trust you, they are more likely to convert. A conversion may get you a sale or an email subscriber; whatever it is for you, this will now allow you to promote your services, products or new posts to them in the future.

Having a blog on your website will position you as an expert, therefore building trust with your audience.

Here on my site, I have a blog for two main reasons:

  1. To help other people optimize and create their own blog

  2. To display my knowledge to my potential clients so they trust me to provide the service they deserve

This isn't the only reason why blogs are so useful. They also:

  • Keep you connected and engaged with your audience

  • Generate more leads (potential customers)

  • Educate your audience on your brand, products, services, and the industry

  • Increase customer touchpoints. The more contact a potential customer has with you or your site, the more likely they are to convert

  • Add personality to your brand

Now its time for the big question.

Do YOU need a blog?

The short answer: Yes.

If you...

  • - Own a business (service or products)

  • - Educate people

  • - Have an opinion

  • - Have a unique insight into a topic or a personal experience

Then you need a blog.

If you said YES, to any one of these, you could benefit from having a blog on your website.

Let me recap some of the fantastic benefits of a having blog:

Firstly, a blog is an educational tool. You can use it to educate people on your niche. This may be your service, products, industry trends, hobbies and interests. If you can name it, you can blog about it.

Once you start creating valuable and consistent content on your blog, you will engage your audience, create a brand personality, (or just show off yours!) and build relationships with your readers.

As I said above, having a blog can position you as an expert in the industry. Show off your knowledge to your customers, clients, and future subscribers!

Let's not forget, a blog comes with a comment section. This small area packs a punch and you can use it to connect with your audience, build a community, and answer any burning questions!

Finally, use your blog to update your readers about all the exciting things your business is up to! Do you have new products or services available? If so, tell them about it!

All these things will help to increase your conversion rate and therefore build your brand.

In conclusion, a blog offers an individual a fun way to explore something you love, track your journey or share your experiences and expertise. For businesses, you can position yourself as an expert in your industry, educate your audience, and build trust.

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments section.

Do you have a blog and if so, how are you finding it?
